Decorating For Dummies

Choosing everything that you need for your room can seem like a daunting task, but take a step back, breathe deeply, and read this simple guide. The first step to creating the perfect room is choosing your bedding. Pick something that reflects your personality, but ultimately something that you will be comfortable sleeping in every night. Avoid itchy sheets and large quantities of “decorative” pillows. If you are cold natured, be sure to bring an extra blanket, whereas if you get hot easily try to avoid heavy comforters.

The next task is to get in contact with your new roommate. You need to decide whether you want to share a refrigerator and microwave. Also, decide if you want to bring carpet. Decide on who should bring what. (Not only does this ensure that you have everything you need, it’s also a great ice breaker!) Once all of that is settled head to Target or Walmart to grab everything that you need. They usually have large “Back to School” sections with aisles dedicated to decorating your dorm room. Don’t let this overwhelm you; you don’t need to buy everything on the shelves. The essentials include: a laundry bag (Or basket of some type), laundry supplies, a shower caddy, silverware and plates (plastic utensils and paper plates work fine), shower shoes, towels, Clorox wipes, tissues and paper towels, power strip (choose one with a surge protector and a long cord), hangers, food (munchies and water bottles are terrific!), alarm clock, and unfortunately, school supplies. This list in not extensive, there may be other items that you feel like you need.

As mentioned earlier, it’s YOUR room; make it yours. Now we reach the final (and possibly most important) step: personalizing your room! Choose posters, dry erase boards, and comfy chairs. Decide if you want to bring carpet, which will help absorb noise and make the floor space more usable. This room becomes your home; make it a place that you want to be. Right now everything is going to seem overwhelming, but just remember to enjoy yourself. Decorating your room is a fun process, and at the end of the day, I can almost guarantee you will be happy with the end result.

Just in case you forgot, you’re about to permanently live at TAMS! On top of everything else that you have to be excited about, one thing may seem to stand out a bit: YOUR DORM ROOM. You finally get a space to decorate!
